'The Bride Price' by Buchi Emecheta (Review!)

Hey readers! Coming at you with another book review!!! I hope you like it!!! Alright, enjoy!!!

The Bride Price by Buchi Emecheta is such an amazing work of literature. I loved every part of it and I loved the historical and cultural ties it included. I guess you guys could call me a sucker for historical fictionπŸ˜‰. The complexity of her writing shows in each and every one of her works, and it's just so perfect. It's not fairytale-like, it's real. I really love this book!!! Okay, let me make you love it too!

This story starts in the city of Lagos, in a home where a family lives. One day, the father leaves Akunna (the main character) and her brother at home. He said he was going to be back but, he never came back. No, he didn't just disappear silly; he died. Something was wrong with him and he was so, very sick. After this event, there was a long period of mourning, in that household. In fact, there was a whole funeral. It included the various tradition in the Igbo culture. I'll let you learn more about that when you read the bookπŸ˜‰. Anyways, according to tradition, her mother had to be taken care of by his elder brother in the village. It has something to do with the tradition of everything "belonging" to the eldest son. So Akunna and her family all carry their belongings and travel to the village to stay forever. Akunna was not trained the same way the girls in the village were, so yes, she struggled with that. Her mother, however, still had to fulfil tradition and complete the last element of her husband's death. She had to stay in a hut alone for a certain number of months (I don't remember exactly) without showering and other things. She was deprived of a lot of things a normal human being needs to you know... survive?! The reason they do this is mentioned in the bookπŸ˜‰. It's obvious that her father's elder brother wants to marry her mother, and so he does. From there, the story takes off!

Like I said before, I enjoyed this story so much!!!! It was so interesting to read and I could barely put it down. What a lovely story! Also please try and read the book and communicate with me on my blog about it! What I just told you right now, isn't even the storyπŸ˜‚. So yes, you need to read it! Anyways have an awesome day!
