"Birthright" by Adenike Lucas (Requested Review!!!)

Image
Hey readers!!!!! Today I’m back with something very very special. This is my first REQUESTED REVIEW!!!!!! It’s kind of the equivalent of a lifestyle blogger’s brand deal except I’m not getting paid…yet 😏. Anyways, I’d like to acknowledge the author that reached out to me with such a pleasant piece of literature. *DRUM ROLL* Adenike Lucas!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was the very first author to reach out to me with his book, Birthright . Told you I had something special planned 😉. Let me just tell you something now now. This book right here is beautifully written. At first I thought I would have to call out the confusion in time eras and all of that, but all of that is explained later on. Nothing is out of place here, everything is perfectly explained and written. Look man, Imma need you to buy this book immediately after this review because you are in for a sweet sweet treat. Also, I’m not sure if this is a spoiler alert but there are some very scary things that happen in this book. Although, ...

'Sunset in Biafra' by Elechi Amadi (Review!!!)

Image
Hey readers, your girl is back with another review!!! This time it's a book review and you are going to love this one. Shall we? (Please note that the picture is edited to look grungy. Thank you!) Sunset in Biafra  is such a credible source to see what happened int he Biafran war. Even though it's a bit opinionated and from one person's point of view, you actually get t a side of the story you probably have never heard before. Bear with me, as this is not a story, it will be a pretty short review. This is a real account of Elechi Amadi's experience during the Biafran war. He was a general who just recently resigned his job before all hell broke loose. Within this book you learn a few things about Nigeria back then and how everything came about. You get to know the exact words used by the leaders at the time, and a few reasons for the tensions in Nigeria at the time. You get to see Elechi Amadi's journey from when he was captured several times to having to claim the ...

'The Bride Price' by Buchi Emecheta (Review!)

Image
Hey readers! Coming at you with another book review!!! I hope you like it!!! Alright, enjoy!!! The Bride Price  by Buchi Emecheta is such an amazing work of literature. I loved every part of it and I loved the historical and cultural ties it included. I guess you guys could call me a sucker for historical fiction 😉 . The complexity of her writing shows in each and every one of her works, and it's just so perfect. It's not fairytale-like, it's real. I really love this book!!! Okay, let me make you love it too! This story starts in the city of Lagos, in a home where a family lives. One day, the father leaves Akunna (the main character) and her brother at home. He said he was going to be back but, he never came back. No, he didn't just disappear silly; he died. Something was wrong with him and he was so, very sick. After this event, there was a long period of mourning, in that household. In fact, there was a whole funeral. It included the various tradition in the Ig...

'The Slave Girl' by Buchi Emecheta (Review!)

Image
I'm finally back again! Did you miss me?😉Today I'm here with another book review!!!!!! So let's get into this delight of a book! 'The Slave Girl' is such a lovely book. I think I even read it twice! Although I don't think I finished it the first time. Anyways, let's really talk about this book. Shall we? Buchi Emecheta wrote this book in such a perfect way. Let me explain. It all started with an ogbanje child. An ogbanje child is one that keeps dying and coming back. This child in particular never died and came back. She was a girl child of course, so it was very unusual for them. This is because every ogbanje child they had given birth to was a girl child. Who is they? Her parents of course. Who is her? Ogbanje Ojebeta of course. She is the token slave girl, but we aren't there yet! I don't even think I want to tell you how she became a slave. Yeah, that's for you to find out😉. Anyways, her parents were so excited to have her. They a...

'A Man of the People' by Chinua Achebe (Review!)

Image
Hey readers! This is coming a day late due to technical difficulties 😬 . I am so sorry about that, but I hope you enjoy today's book review!!!!! Let's talk about 'A Man of the People' by Chinua Achebe. Yes, we are going back to the classics. Although if I am going to be honest, when you think about Chinua Achebe, you usually think of 'Things Fall Apart'. I would like to say that this is one of his lesser-known novels. I'm going to be honest with you, it wasn't my favourite when I began, but I became more invested as I went through it. It's not the best book I've read, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It was in the middle for me, but I will definitely continue to read this kind of literature! Again, that's only my opinion, so I'm thinking you'll have to read it yourself to judge it accordingly. In this novel the central theme here is POLITICS. I mean Nigerian politics by the way. That can get messy realllll quick! In this...

'Americanah' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Review!)

Image
Hey readers! I'm back with a book review this time. Expect another review on Saturday! I have a posting schedule now, Tuesdays and Saturdays!!!!! So anticipate. Okay, let's get into this review!!!! Americanah is a wonderful story. I loved every single moment of it. Chimamanda has a special flair in her writing and it surely appeared in this one. Hmm... where do I start? Okay, let's talk about the plot itself. This story was a love story, to say the least. Yes, it did address underlying issues within Nigeria, America, and even Britain; but it was a love story. It was a romance between Obinna and Ifemelu. Yes, that's exactly what it was. If you like love stories definitely read this one, because that is the meat in this soup of a story. Dang, I'm really trying to not spoil it for you, but that might happen. I'm sorry, I hope you can forgive me. Anyways, this story starts in Lagos, Nigeria. The time period wasn't mentioned exactly but judging from the ...

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Image
P.S. This is definitely not the original cover so don't come for meeeee!!! I recently just finished this book and it's amazing. Honestly, I loved reading this book so much and I don't understand why I hadn't read it a long time ago. I even have some history on the book. It was written in 1958  Chinua Achebe and has won various awards. This is a great piece of Nigerian Literature. I hope everyone gets to read it. It's a tale of when old traditions meet the new. How you receive them or reject them, how you let others respond to them, and what you do to yourself. I don't know if I'm making sense but you need to read it to truly get it. You need to really enter the mind of the author to understand the meaning of this story you know. Okay, let me give the general overview of the book. So it was set in the mid-1900s, when the British first came to Nigeria to actually spread their religion and not for the other things they were doing before that. This boo...

The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Image
It's another classic by the one and only Chimamanda. Now this book is amazing. It's not just one story, it's a book of stories. Literally...I'm not kidding, an actual book full of stories. Each chapter is another story from a whole different point of view. You learn so much about different types of people from different backgrounds. This is a must read for sure. You can't just skip over this book, you have to read each and every word because you can't catch up in the next chapter, it's page by page and word by word. That's what makes it even more amazing to read. I would try to give you an overview/summary of the book but honestly, I don't think I can. It's what I said, a story of stories. There is nothing connecting these stories, they don't tie in together, they're just there. They're there for us to read and enjoy, learning new things the whole time. It's more than a book, it's an actual experience. From aspiring to...

Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Image
Another classic by the fabulous Chimamanda. As you can probably tell, I love her so much. She's a good influence to people everywhere. Okay now about the boooook!!!!!!!!!!! (We'll definitely talk about her again though👌). Now I could write a whole book about this book, which would be turned into a movie. That’s how amazing this book is. It has class and it gives you new opinions. When I read this I was in absolute awe. I would love to give you a deep analyzation of this book. So why shouldn’t? Let me stop rambling and get started on this. Purple Hibiscus is a storyyyyyyyy!!! Like honestly you guys need to read this book, you would love it just as much as I did. It was full of climaxes like at every single point. Just going up and down and up and down. Most times it was just peaking, like a heartbeat machine where the heart rate is just peaking and doesn't go down. Then towards the end, the biggest climax happens and you know what I may have hinted at it but you sh...

The Concubine by Elechi Amadi

Image
Okay so I just finished reading this book recently and you guys really don't know. Honestly, you guys need to read this book. It's just way too good. Alright, let me start talking about the book.  This story literally changes from a day in the village to spiritual encounters. It gives you a scenario that might happen, but at the same time probably not happen at all. The book takes us into a whole new genre. We've heard of realistic fiction, but have you heard of realistic fantasy. Yeah.. me neither, but those are the vibes that this book gives me. Although looking at the Igbo culture from all the books I have read about it and looking at the traditionalist culture. All of this could have happened. All these things are real but you just have to fight against them you know. Lol you guys probably think I'm on some Harry Potter ish right now but know I'm not talking about dragons, fairies, giants and all of that. I'm talking about... well you'll just h...
