'A Man of the People' by Chinua Achebe (Review!)
Hey readers! This is coming a day late due to technical difficulties😬. I am so sorry about that, but I hope you enjoy today's book review!!!!!
Let's talk about 'A Man of the People' by Chinua Achebe. Yes, we are going back to the classics. Although if I am going to be honest, when you think about Chinua Achebe, you usually think of 'Things Fall Apart'. I would like to say that this is one of his lesser-known novels. I'm going to be honest with you, it wasn't my favourite when I began, but I became more invested as I went through it. It's not the best book I've read, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It was in the middle for me, but I will definitely continue to read this kind of literature! Again, that's only my opinion, so I'm thinking you'll have to read it yourself to judge it accordingly.
In this novel the central theme here is POLITICS. I mean Nigerian politics by the way. That can get messy realllll quick! In this book, it definitely did. I'm guessing you need me to go in-depth by what I mean by Nigerian politics. I mean running for a position in the government, but with added ingredients. This could include: Cheating, Propaganda, Stealing one another's mistresses, and Adultery. A wholeeeee mess! Yes, I do believe that someone can go into Nigerian politics without doing these things though. This book, however, highlights all those things that one should not do. At one point the main character, Odili, does actually fall in real love. Let me go back a bit though. Odili meets Cheif Nanga (his future competitor) in secondary school. He was Odili's teacher. Somehow he skyrocketed up the social ladder and became a minister. The post that both of them were competing for had to do with their village. It was very unlikely for Odili to win because he was "a small boy of yesterday". I won't tell you who won though, that's for you to read and find out. At one point I did experience anger because of how wicked a few characters seemed to be. Man this is one you'll have to read by yourself to understand. Wait I want to name drop!!!! You have to read it to find out about Edna 😉.
I would love to commend Chinua Achebe on this novel. Although it didn't grasp my full attention at first, he made sure that at one point the climax would be there. It would be sustainable and it would carry you to the end of the book. Heck, it might even leave you wondering! This style of writing is pretty creative if you ask me. You just have to hold on tight.
I do hope my review did this novel some kind of justice. Like I said before, this wasn't my favourite novel at the start, but it does get more interesting as you go through it. At one point you'll just zoom all the way to the end because of how much you want to know. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a unique style of literature to read and is planning to expand their reading horizons. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed my review!!! I'll see you on Saturday with a new one!!! Stay woke, smart, and beautiful. Remember that you are enough by the way!!!!
