13th (Review!!!)
Hey readers! I left for a whole week😭. I missed you guys so much! I left due to technical difficulties, but don't worry I'm back at my laptop coming at you with a whole new review!!! This review should be considered as an educational resource, so enjoy!!!
Now let me tell you something, this documentary right here blew my mind😱! I loved the way that the speakers explained the impacts of the 13th amendment and why slavery was never really over. I understood the judicial system a lot more. This was an amazing documentary folks. Let me summarize it for you.
So you see the 13th amendment technically says that nobody in the United States of America can be held against their own will UNLESS they are convicted of a crime. So that means, you are free until you go to jail. That clause right there is what is ruining lives till this day. Immediately after the Civil War, America had to rejuvenate its economy. The basis of their economy before was actually slavery. So they thought, "No more slaves, how are we going to fix this". That is how they used that clause to their advantage. Black people were arrested for doing the absolute least, such as loitering. They were put into jail and forced to work. So technically, they were made slaves all over again. To keep this going, they made sure that the black man was forever to be seen as a criminal. How? Well, they used the media. That always has an impact on people. The film "A Birth of a Nation" was made and played everywhere. In fact, the president at the time even played it in the White House. Cool name huh, well whatever you do, DO NOT WATCH THAT FILM!!! It's very disgusting and vile. It glorifies the KKK and destroys the black man's character. Personally, I didn't go in-depth on finding out who even played the black man in the film and why they would do such a thing, but I'm pretty sure it was a white man using blackface. In fact, I know it was. I didn't even know he was supposed to be black, I really thought it was a mad white man that rubbed soot all over his face. On the contrary, it wasn't. The film corrupted the minds of everyone and the image of black men. Black men were now seen as criminal and harassed everywhere they went. On top of that, black people weren't even liked or appreciated back then. So now, the leaders at the time made them second class citizens. That, my friends, is segregation. I'm not going to go too in-depth in that part of the documentary so that you can enjoy it as well, but I'll skip to the main points. Martin Luther King and other great leaders of the black community found a way to make sure that Civil Rights were created. You would think that this would be the end. But no, it's not. Obviously, they still don't like blacks, so they just had to take those rights away from us. We go back to the 13th amendment. They put us in jail. Richard Nixon, Ronald Raegan, and Bill Clinton (his was unintentional and he did apologize for it, but it was the worst) all made laws to incriminate the blacks. Richard Nixon and Ronald Raegan declared a war on drugs, which translates to "Send all the black people to jail". They made laws that put us in a tight corner and took away all our rights. So even if we wanted better leaders, we could never have them. We couldn't vote because most of our population was in jail, we couldn't work or even live. When we went to prison and came out, it was like we were in prison all over again. From "Stop and Frisk" to "Three Strikes and Your Out" to "Stand Your Ground". There was almost nothing we could do. Even if we were wronged, we could not get our justice because of these laws. We speak in the case of Trayvon Martin, the only reason the man who killed him for no reason is still free is that he pleaded self-defence. The Stand Your Ground law helped him to get free. Stand Your Ground says if you feel threatened you could kill the supposed threat. How did this law come into play? ALEC.
I forgot what it stands for but technically it's a group of Politicians and Corporations that come together to create laws. CORPORATIONS SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH LAWS!!! Why? They are only looking out for themselves and therefore don't make judgements that help the people. So many corporations are in that group, so we get terrible laws. I'm starting to get so mad, so now I leave it to you to watch this part and understand. I'll give you a hint, Why do you think Walmart sells guns? (I'm not sure if they still do, but I know they aren't part anymore but they somehow still fund it?! Yeah, confusing, so you can watch and understand). Another hint, Private prisons belong to that group. Connect the dots.
I would like to commend Ava DuVernay for this amazing documentary. SHE DID THAT!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I advise you to go off and watch this. It's available on Netflix and on Youtube. Go knock yourselves out with education. On this note, I would like to sign off. Remember to stay woke, wise, and beautiful!!!
